Next Generation Learning Challenge grant winners.
Next Generation Learning Challenge grant winners. The first wave of funding under the Next Generation LearningChallenges was announced last year and focused primarily onpostsecondary education. Grant-seekers were asked to address fourchallenges: deployment of open core courseware; scaling of blendedlearning programs; encouragement of deeper learner engagement; andmobilization of learning analytics. More than 600 institutions andorganizations responded to the RFP (Request For Proposal) A document that invites a vendor to submit a bid for hardware, software and/or services. It may provide a general or very detailed specification of the system. 1. (business) RFP - Request for Proposal.2. . The field was eventually narroweddown to 29 grant winners. They were announced in April. Following is alist of community colleges among the grant winners and theirdescriptions of their planned work: * Central Piedmont Community College Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) is a large community college located in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The school was founded in 1963; it is the result of a merger between Mecklenburg College and the Central Industrial Education Center. (N.C.) Online Student Profile Learning System: A Learner Analytics Modelfor Student Success Central Piedmont Community College will lead a consortium ofcommunity colleges from across the nation in the adoption of the OnlineStudent Profile Learning System (OSPLS), a technology-enabled solutionthat has a proven track record of improving the academic success ofyoung adult learners enrolled in developmental education courses. TheOSPLS technology platform and four integrated OSPLS components includean orientation course, student assessment tools, online student profileand staff professional development. The partner colleges will implementthe OSPLS on their campuses and will support the goal of scaling upacross the nation beyond the NGLC project period. * Cerritos Community College (Calif.) Open General Education Curriculum at Multi-Institutional Scale The project will create and scale a comprehensive, first-year,general-education curriculum that uses existing open educationalresources Open educational resources (OER) are an Internet empowered worldwide community effort to create an education commons. The term "open educational resources" was first adopted at UNESCO's 2002 Forum on the Impact of Open Courseware for Higher Education in Developing Countries and technologies. The project will not develop new OER OER Office of Extramural Research (US NIH)OER Open Educational ResourcesOER Officer Evaluation ReportOER Optimized Edge RoutingOER Office of Energy ResearchOER Owners' Equivalent RentOER Operating Expense Ratio , butwill invest to identify and improve the best of the existing stock. Theproject will bring together senior leaders from institutions that areseeking to adopt OER with OER experts, in order to create effective, sustainable, collaborative models to support the academic success ofunderserved populations. * Chattanooga State Community College (Tenn.) Do the Math! Increasing Student Engagement and Success in Maththrough Blended Learning "Do the Math! Increasing Student Engagement and Success"will aim to increase student success in developmental math by utilizingsoftware, disrupting the traditional math class and introducing a newapproach where students work in the math classroom and teachers spendtheir time assisting students individually. Chattanooga State CommunityCollege, Jefferson Community and Technical College (Ken.), University ofHawaii (body, education) University of Hawaii - A University spread over 10 campuses on 4 islands throughout the state.http://hawaii.edu/uhinfo.html.See also Aloha, Aloha Net. Maul and the Education Trust will join forces in this projectwhich promises to increase both student engagement and success in thearea of developmental math. * Community College of the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). , Portland StateUniversity (Ore.), South Texas College, and St. Paul College (Minn.) Open Source Blended Learning Solutions Partnership for Retainingand Graduating Gatekeeper Course and Developmental Learners byEliminating Traditional Developmental Writing Courses The goal of this project is to scale alternative methods ofavoiding placement of students in developmental non-credit courses bysupporting them in blended learning environments at four colleges led bythe Community College of the District of Columbia and PortlandState's Learner Web. The strategy for disruptively implementingthis project will include the evaluation of different blendedstrategies. This analytic approach to implementation will let theprincipal investigators determine see which online blended interventionsare the most effective in supporting students toward the goals ofimproved completion, persistence, content mastery, and mastery of deeperlearning outcomes. * Iowa Community College Online Consortium eAnalytics--ICCOC Best Practices in Using Learner Analytics toEnhance Student Success The seven community colleges of the Iowa Community College OnlineConsortium (ICCOC) use commonly available learner analytics to improveinstruction and student learning outcomes. This grant will give theICCOC the opportunity to share what it does and how it does it withothers who wish to start implementing processes of their own. Inaddition, the ICCOC will look at how improving communication betweenstudent services and instructors can be used to improve studentretention and success. * Sinclair Community College (Ohio) Scale-up and Sustainability of the Student Success Plan Software The project will open-source the award-winning Student Success Plansystem developed at Sinclair Community College. The system consists of(1) preventive measures, early alerts, assertive intervention, holisticcounseling techniques, student self assessment; and (2) web-basedsoftware for tracking students and data analytics. The software isdesigned to increase the success and persistence rates of students withan emphasis on first-time, degree- or certificate-seeking students withkey risk factors. Each college determines risk factors to target, suchas low-income or academically-unprepared students. The software will betransitioned to a sustainable open source model, including a communitymanagement organization. * The City Colleges of Chicago The City Colleges of Chicago is a system of seven community colleges which provide learning opportunities for Chicago residents at the schools or online, and also members of the US military through the Navy Campus to enhance their knowledge and skills. Math On-Demand + Early Warning System Student success in developmental math courses is one of thegreatest challenges facing community colleges. CCC's projectaddresses this issue by adapting and scaling Math-On-Demand (MOD), asuccessful program at Wright College, to the district's six othercolleges. Fully implemented, this project will have two maincomponents--Math On-Demand (MOD) and Early Alert System (EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) A security system for preventing theft in retail stores that uses disposable label tags or reusable hard tags attached to the merchandise. )--and willbe renamed MOD+. Through the creation of a blended learning environmentusing computerized, modularized modularized?adj.Having or made up of modules: modularized housing.developmental courses, MOD+ addressesthe objectives of improving content mastery, course completion andpersistence and ultimately increases college completion rates forlow-income young adults in Chicago. * The SUNY Learning Network The SUNY Learning Network (SLN) is a system of online courses and online degree programs organized by the State University of New York. The program offers thousands of online courses along with more than 80 online degree programs, including associates, bachelors, and masters The SUNY SUNY - State University of New York SLN "Catch-up and Complete" Enhanced BlendedLearning Initiative We know that education can disrupt the cycle of poverty and theintergenerational transmission of poverty. We know that 40 to 70 percentof incoming college students need remedial education. We also know thatmore than half that try, fail and drop out, and that billions of dollarsare spent on activity that never leads to a credential for the student. To address this "Bermuda Triangle" of developmentaleducation--where most students go in and never come out--the StateUniversity of New York's Catch-up and Complete Enhanced BlendedLearning Initiative will help students catch up so that they can thencomplete their education. The SUNY Learning Network will work with SUNYcampuses to "blend" and enhance selected degree andcertificate programs for this project, specifically targeting youngadult single parents from underserved populations with educationaloptions that focus on student success.
