Report on minorities in the health professions.
Report on minorities in the health professions. A report by the Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the HealthcareWorkforce finds that "African Americans African AmericanMulticulture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.See Race. , Hispanics, AmericanIndians American Indians:see Americas, antiquity and prehistory of the; Natives, Middle American; Natives, North American; Natives, South American. , and certain segments of the nation's Asian/PacificIslander population are not present in significant numbers" in themakeup makeupIn the performing arts, material used by actors for cosmetic purposes and to help create the characters they play. Not needed in Greek and Roman theatre because of the use of masks, makeup was used in the religious plays of medieval Europe, in which the angels' faces of the nation's physicians, dentists Dentists can refer to one of the following: Practitioners of dentistry The Dentists, a British band active in the 1980s and 1990s and nurses. While acknowledging that the nation's medical, nursing anddental schools Noun 1. dental school - a graduate school offering study leading to degrees in dentistryschool of dentistrygrad school, graduate school - a school in a university offering study leading to degrees beyond the bachelor's degree have made efforts toward increasing minority enrollmentsince the civil rights movement of the 1960s, the report finds that, collectively, they have not succeeded in achieving greater diversityamong their students, especially in light of our increasingly diversepopulation. For example, together, African Americans, Hispanic HispanicMulticulture A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race Social medicine Any of 17 major Latino subcultures, concentrated in California, Texas, Chicago, Miam, NY, and elsewhere Americansand American Indians make up more than 25 percent of the U.S.population, but only nine percent of the nation's nurses--and lessthan 10 percent of baccalaureate nursing faculties. The vision put forth by the commission focuses on high-quality carefor the entire population and notes that, "Diversity is a key toexcellence in health care. To achieve that new vision, care must beprovided by a well-trained, qualified, and culturally competent healthprofessions workforce that mirrors the diversity of the population itserves." Among the commission's recommendations are that baccalaureatecolleges and health professions schools should provide and support"bridging programs" that enable graduates of two-year collegesto succeed in the transition to four-year colleges, and that graduatesof two-year community college nursing programs should be encouraged andsupported in enrolling in baccalaureate degree-granting nursingprograms. Recognizing the need for increased funding to achieve the goals ithas set forth, the commission makes a number of recommendations, such assubstantially increasing funding to support diversity programs with theNational Health Service Corps, and Titles VII and VIII of the PublicHealth Service Act. It also encourages increased support frombusinesses, foundations and other private and public organizations.
