Pengiran Mohd Ali's biography highlights the considerable rolehe played in Brunei's history, particularly during the 1950s and1960s. A close confidant of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Omar Ali Saifuddin is the name of three Sultans of Brunei: Omar Ali Saifuddin I (reigned 1762-1795) Omar Ali Saifuddin II (reigned 1829-1852) Omar Ali Saifuddin III (reigned 1950-1967) III (father ofPrincess Areal Nasibah), Pengiran Mohd Ali was a member of the BruneiConstitutional Advisory Committee in 1953, which made recommendationsabout constitutional advance in the sultanate. (2) Between 1954 and 1957he served as Chairman of the Brunei Town District Advisory Council andan observer on the State Council. He became acting Head of the IslamicReligious Council in 1959 and Speaker of the Legislative Council betweenMarch 1959 and September 1962 (Eusoff Agaki 1991:237). He then heldoffice as Deputy Menteri Besar Literally, "big minister" in Malay, a Menteri Besar is a Chief Executive of the state governments of Perlis, Johor, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan in Malaysia—that is, all states with royal rulers. between 1 September 1962 and 18 September1965, when he was awarded 436 days' leave, prior to retirement (BGG BGG Board Game Geek (website)BGG Big Green Gathering (UK)BGG Briggs & Stratton Corporation (stock symbol)BGG Business Graphics Group 4.6.1966:128; BGG 10.9.1966). This was an unsettled time encompassingthe Brunei Revolt of December 1962, the uncertainties surrounding theformation of Malaysia, and the problems created by Confrontation. After leaving the government Pengiran Mohd Ali entered politics, not entirely successfully. He began well enough, winning a seat on theBrunei-Muara District Council at a by-election held on 23 October 1965(Eusoff Agaki 1991:125). He founded a political party, the PartaiKemajuan Rakyat (PAKAR), (3) or the People's Progressive Party There are several parties named People's Progressive Party: People's Progressive Party (The Gambia) People's Progressive Party (Guyana) People's Progressive Party (Liberia) People's Progressive Party (Malaysia) People's Progress Party (Papua New Guinea) , inDecember 1965 (Hussainmiya 1995:353). On 31 July 1966 he becamefounder-Chairman of Barisan Kemerdekaan Rakyat (BAKER) or thePeople's Independence Front. This resulted from a merger betweenPAKAR and another fledgling party, the Barisan Rakyat Brunei (BARA) orBrunei People's Front. He contested one Legislative Councilby-election in Temburong District on 8 January 1968, but lost narrowly(Eusoff Agaki 1991: 143); and another there in April 1969, but lostagain (Hussainmiya 1995:378, citing BB 27.4.1969). From a different sphere of life, Md Don Haji Jaludin, known as"Madun," was an actor who took his final bow aged fifty-six on11 August 2005 at RIPAS Hospital in Bandar Seri Begawan Bandar Seri Begawan(bän`där sĕr`ē bĕgä`wän), city (1991 est. pop. 46,229), capital and chief port of the sultanate of Brunei, of which it is also the business and commercial center. , having falleninto a coma about three weeks earlier. He retired from government servicein 2004. He last acted in a drama serial for a private production houseonly a few months before his demise. "Madun" also participatedin Pentarama (4) events (BBO Sa. 13.8.2005:h8. him). The funeral of Mr. Wu Tsai Tien was held on 10 June 2005. A formerpresident of the Taiwanese Association of Overseas Chinese in NBDdoubling as an Honorary Commissioner of the Overseas Chinese AffairsCommission (OCAC OCAC Oil Companies Advisory Committee (Pakistan)OCAC Operations Control & Analysis CenterOCAC Oceanic Air-Traffic Control ), he died of a heart attack recently (exact date notgiven) after participating in an annual walkathon. He was found dead inthe driver's seat of his parked car. Dr. James Chen, head of theTaiwanese Economic and Cultural Representative Office, praised Mr.Wu's "valuable services" as a bridge between TECRO TECRO Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office andthe local Chinese community (BBO Tu.14.6.2005:h11.htm). Mention might be made quickly here of: (1) Karwana Balu, a lawyer who died aged twenty-four in the earlyafternoon of Saturday 30 July 2005 when his car skidded off the road andcaught fire at milestone 30, Jalan Tutong. Trapped inside his burningvehicle, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Tutong hospital (BBOM.1.8.2005:h2.htm). (2) Awang Kasmin bin Kasim, a resident of Kampung Setia A, whodrowned near the Sungai Lampai River filling station on the morning of19 September 2005. A French Expatriate in NBD Philippe Henri Petitier, a Frenchman holding office since 2002 asSenior Deputy General Manager in NBD of Baiduri Bank, was killed in aroad accident on the Lumut bypass on 18 November 2005. Mr. Petitier wasrushed to the Seri Suri Begawan hospital, but it was too late (BBOSa.19.11.2005:h2.htm; not "Suri Seri" as given there). Thedeceased's age is not stated, but some indication is provided bythe fact that he had been with BNP Paribas Group since 1981, working inBahrain, Qatar, Gabon, Lebanon, and Dubai. Immediately before joiningBaiduri Bank, he was the Deputy Managing Director of BNP Paribas inCairo. At the time of his appointment, Baiduri Bank confidentlyanticipated that his expertise would "add to the growing success ofthe bank. With already more than two hundred workers and nine branchesstrategically located nationwide, Baiduri has become the second largestbank in the country and this was achieved in a short period of threeyears" (BBO Tu.15.10.2002:h6.htm). The British Connection Several prominent Britons with Brunei/NBD links departed during2005. Sir John Baines "Jack" Johnston (1918-2005), who died on16 October 2005, was Head of the Far East Department at the ColonialOffice in 1956-1957 at a time when attempts at constitutional advance inBrunei were being complicated by the appearance on the local scene ofthe Partai Rakyat Brunei, founded in January 1956. On 30 May 1957 Mr.Johnston held a meeting at the Colonial Office with the party'slawyer, Walter Raebum QC (1897-1972); and on 5 September that year heheld discussions with Sheikh sheikhor shaykhAmong Arabic-speaking tribes, especially Bedouin, the male head of the family, as well as of each successively larger social unit making up the tribal structure. Sir John was subsequently British High Commissioner inMalaysia (1971-1974) and Canada (1974-1978) before serving as a Governorof the BBC BBCin full British Broadcasting Corp.Publicly financed broadcasting system in Britain. A private company at its founding in 1922, it was replaced by a public corporation under royal charter in 1927. between 1978 and 1985 (DT Tu.25.10.2005:21). Sir Edward Heath (1916-2005), Prime Minister between 1970 and 1974,died on 17 July 2005 (BBC R4 Su.17.7.2005:2200h BST (convention) BST - British Summer Time. During his time asLeader of the Opposition (1965-1970), he made a speech at Canberra(August 1968) in which he committed a future Conservative Government toreverse the then Labour Government's policy with regard to Brunei(Eusoff Agaki 1991:158, n146). The Right Honourable Sir John Julian Ganzoni, Baronet baronetBritish hereditary rank of honor, first created by James I in 1611 to raise money, ostensibly for support of troops in Ulster. The baronetage is not part of the peerage, nor is it an order of knighthood. , second BaronBelstead (1932-2005), a Minister of State at the Foreign andCommonwealth Office in 1982-1983, peacefully breathed his last on 3December 2005 at Ipswich after a long illness (DT W.7.12.2005:22e #1).His official visit to Brunei in April 1983 occurred at a particularlysensitive time in Anglo-Brunei relations during the run-up to fullindependence. Various issues remained to be settled, notably defensearrangements. There were indications of tension, such as the abruptdeparture of the British High Commissioner, the "suddendisappearance" of the BBC news relay from RTB, the axing ofBritish-style saluting in the armed forces, and, later in the year, theremoval of the valuable Brunei portfolio from the Crown Agents (LTW.3.8.1983:13). Lord Belstead's visit does not appear to have beena success, or not immediately so at any rate. Pelita Brunei'ssilence about the reasons for the visit and the absence of any report atall of his subsequent departure were noted by Dr. Roger Kershaw, whoadded: "All that emerged was a denial (PB 4.5.1983) of a StraitsTimes (Singapore) report that Brunei was considering revising theagreements with Shell because Britain had rejected Brunei's termsfor the continued stationing of the Gurkha Battalion at Seria.Meanwhile, the Borneo Bulletin, 23 April, had reported the breakdown intalks and hinted that the terms for the control of the Gurkhas were thecrux of the problem" (Kershaw 1984:72). A settlement of the Gurkhaissue was eventually reached in September, when it was also announcedthat HRH Prince Charles would represent the United Kingdom at theindependence celebrations due to take place on 23 February 1984(DT22.9.1983; DT23.9.1983). A "popular Conservative minister for more than twodecades," Lord Belstead "never lit up his audiences" andwas sometimes nicknamed "Lord Bedstead." Educated at Eton andOxford, he was "graced with a beautiful voice," and"could be relied upon to talk common sense while seeking consensuswhenever possible" (DTF (Digital Tape Format) A high-performance magnetic tape technology from Sony that was based on the helical scan transport and cartridge shell of Sony's highly successful 1/2" Digital Betacam. . 16.12.2005:25 *). If so, this might helpto explain why the UK was eventually able to reach agreement with Bruneiin 1983. Away from the world of high politics, Allan Harry Beekett(1914-2005) was a civil engineer working for Sir Bruce White, WolfeBarry and Partners. He designed and advised on various projectsthroughout the world, including Muara International Port in Brunei.During the Second World War he had designed the floating roadway andanchor systems for the Mulberry harbors (DT Th.30.6.2005:29 *). A. H.Beckett was joint author (with S.
